I have several orchids in bloom and I will post the pics when I can.

My computer crashed and I lost a lot of info. I had many pictures in Photbucket, but without the Icon I don't know how to bring them up. I lost some of my orchid records, the new ones which I had not backed up yet. I can't believe how much 'stuff' I had to transfer from CDs to my new hard drive. Some of it could be saved from my old computer but not all of it. When I finish I will post some pictures which I saved on disks.

Now I need to figure where to put my pictures so I can bring them up to post them.

Some day I will catch up. I hope.........

What a pain, it's when computers die that we realise how much we rely on them. I know I do.

Hope you get it all back sorted soon.

Talk about bad luck! I hope you will be able to get a lot of stuff back. A system wipe out is something that really scares me. I have too many irreplaceable photos on my laptop. So I got myself an external hard drive and regularily back everything up on it. Well worth the investment IMO.

Thanks Camille. I think I will get an external hard drive. It has been a real pain trying to retrive what I can. I have lost some things which I can't replace. I think prevention is the way to go.

When you back up your info does it also back up your program files?

I found that Vista will not work with some of the programs I was using on XP. The computer I bought has Vista on it but I will get a free upgrade when the new program to replace Vista is available. Hopefully my current programs will still be usable.

Fortunately, some, but not all, of the family pictures I lost can be scanned in again. My scanner would not work with Vista but the man helping me said "don't buy another scanner, the one I have is better than most of the newer ones". He played with it until he got it to work. I can't scan using my computer, but he found a way for me to use it using the buttons of the scanner. It is difficult but it works. Saves me the expense of buying a new scanner.

As soon as I figure out how to get my pictures from my files to copy into the forum, or get Photobucket back up, I will have a bunch of them to post.

For now I back up manually every week or so, which is complicated since I have to remember what's backed up already and what's not. There are programs that you can install on your computer that will automatically back up files to the external hard drive at regular intervales that you chose. XP (don't know about Vista) also has a backup wizard (that you may have to install if it's not there). I don't back up program files, but I keep all the program install things in a file.

Marilyn, that's bad luck, my computer crashed a few years ago and I managed to retrieve most things (I also now have an external hard drive like Camille -since it happened!! )
I did not lose the photos I had put in Photobucket too - I might have got the whole thing wrong ... but with Photobucket all you have to do is go on their site : .. log into your account & your photos will be there?

Nenella

Thanks. I did go to their site and was able to bring up my file. I couldn't find their Icon so I just added a pic so I could put it on my desktop. Thank you for the rescue.
