I love the night blooming cereus soooooooooo much that I collect a pattern of dishes from the 1940's with this flower pattern.

.........Here, have a look.

Enjoy your beautiful plant!
Sandy,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, but that is actually kind of cool...to think that I am growing a plant that inspired a line of dishes decades before I came along. It doesn't make me cool, but the plant must be hip.

They can be grown in full sun (the way my mother has theirs in Venezuela)! The leaves will however become very very pale yellowish with some red spots... therefore, I would prefer a bit of protection (but still high light!) and the plant looks healthier... I have seen people in Germany growing them in full sun during the sommer, and in the regions where the winter is a bit milder, even growing them outside in Winter (however, I would be very very carefull with it!).

The most sun and branches the plant has, the mre flowers you will get...

That is a really beautiful plant. I have a related plant Epiphyllum ackermannii which has red flowers and flowers in the day time so no scent, but copious amounts of sweet pink nectar. (Tastes delicious) I tried to do the time lapse photography myself but that link is really amazing, Dorothy, thanks for putting it up.

Congratulations on a really beautiful cactus
regards

epiphyllum oxypetalum or night blooming cereus, really isnt a cereus...and shares the name queen of the night with selenecereus plants too...but what a beautiful example of a well grown plant!!! i agree that more sun provides better blooming....

Stunning blossoms David
I'm curious to know if these need any cool down in order to set flowers. This has nothing to do with the one I seen at the local greenhouse thats lonely. I'm just asking

Hi David,

That is an awsome flower. I remember getting a cutting years ago and it never thrived. I lived in Illinois at the time. Always wanted to see it bloom. I was told it was fragrant and only bloomed at night. Now after seeing yours I think I'll have to track one down sometime.

Hi Gloria,

I don't know the answer to your question, but I can tell you that it only blooms in the summer, and it does so three times a year, at least that's what it's been doing here in south Florida. Whether or not our cooler winters have anything to do with it or not, I'm not sure...
