Okay, here it is in its coconut grow-greenhouse. Should I add a little damp sphag around the bottom to keep humidity way up?

You could. Instead I would take it out and dip in water when the husk gets dry. That way you can wash off any mold growing on the husk.

your choice...i would make a bed of styrafoam and rockwool and keep it moist...

be careful if you wash the outside as the plant will be sprouting from one of the three eyes and the initial roots will be delicate and hairlike...then it will become a hose

I took the challenge soon after this thread started, bought a coconut from my supermarket (gave them all a good shake to find a nice sloshy one!) and put in a plastic pot, in water, in the sun, with a loose, clear plastic cover so it could breath. Kept the yucky water topped up, a few flies committed suicide for fertiliser, and today there is sign of a shoot! Hooray! But it's not at the end where the three eyes are?

That is great!

I visited family over Christmas and turned the heat down in my house. We didn't have freezing weather, but the sprouting coconut in the jar got too cold and the shoot molded. I'll try again soon when the weather warms up, and coconuts are cheaper.

Okay, here's my update...

Nada. Just sitting there. Since middle of November. {{sigh}} Saw a tiny bit of white mold. Gonna wash it off a bit, rotate it a little. Leaving the cover off for a bit. But I do think maybe I have a bit of sphagnum that's beginning to grow.

This is patience at a whole new level.
