Acceptable. I was thinking more like Salem witch trials or Apaches. I note we were aptly named, as DC is certainly staying taller than me.

The previous owner had planted 5 coconut palms around the yard.
4 of them would threaten vehicles and people as they matured.
So, I took a chainsaw and cut those 4 down.
They were the typical tall type.

There are shorter varieties, the Samoan, and I believe a Fijian.
The tall types can take as much as 20 years to begin developing fruit [nuts].
The Samoan supposedly takes less timed to mature at a much shorter height.

Sprouted nuts are readily available.
But, the shorter varieties are much higher priced and in high demand for local use.

I've kept one of the existing tall coconuts, but I do not expect to see fruit from it.
I am in my late 70's.
I certainly won't be climbing a coconut for fruit in my 90's.

I have considered one of the shorter types.
But, the longer I wait, the less likely I'll ever get one.

My sprouting plant rotted last winter when it got too cold. I've been waiting to buy a nice fresh one when coconuts were back in season. Today (at Fry's supermarket, owned by Kroger) I found some very large coconuts that all held lots of water inside, and felt very dense. I got one for $2.

I brought it home and soaked it in water for 6 hours. It is so fresh and full of liquid it sinks rather than floats.

I put it, wet, back into my glass storage jar. I set it on a plastic food container so the coconut doesn't stand in water. I will put it someplace nice and warm.
