I'd fasten it to the tree, but keep the bottom portion (with roots - hopefully) in a large pot with a very open mix of bark and hapuu to give the roots some moisture until the roots on the upper part begin to grow and stick to the tree. Daily misting would help. Once the upper roots take hold, ditch the pot.

it has tried to bud twice and both times they all blasted....these are already farther along than any of the previous spikes

You gonna try to pollinate and try to collect pods? I've read it tales a long time, and many daily steps.
