I have been setting up a cool/intermediate terrarium for growing highland Nepenthes, and would love to incorporate some companions (aka: cool/intermediate orchid species)

Perhaps run a poll to at least select an orchid alliance?

I don't think that this is a good way to proceed... It is REALLY REALLY hard to find orchids that meet the general criteria (usually compact, intermediate grower, and under $25) that is available in sufficient numbers in the US, Canada and Europe (the 3 zones we usually deal with in each project.) The task is probably going to be even more difficult this time, now that Oak Hill Gardens (USA) is gone. Since it's nice to have a poll at the end to vote on the project plant, we need to find at least 5 candidate plants, which is easier said than done.

Usually size and temperature requirements are a more important criteria for many people than the alliance the plants are in. For instance, I can't have very large plants, nor cool growers. So we usually stick to compact intermediate growers (or compact and have 3 categories - cool- intermediate- warm) so that a maximum number of people will be able to participate.

I'm thinking up of some ideas for the new project based on experience with past projects. Still some time, there's no point starting up a project until late march-early april, which is the earliest everyone can have orchids shipped without running the risk of getting a bocx of frozen mush.

Ok, as mod, can you lock off the poll that's started? I may have jumped the starters gun.

I didn't see that you had already started a poll.... Why not leave it up anyway, and we can use it as a sort of guideline? If a lot of people like Alliance X, then we can do our best to find candidates in that alliance, and complete the list with others.

Camille, I'm fairly new to OB. But as I'm retired, I do have the time to be a project partner and I'd love to do it! I have a surgery scheduled for mid March but that would only take me out of commission for a couple of weeks.
Let me know if I can be of help.
Donna

Camille, I didn't realize this thread went back several years when I sent my previous post. At that point you were asking for volunteers. I'm don't know if you need volunteers for 2015 project but if you do I'd love to help.
Thanks Donna

Camille: will you please add me to the list for the project. I've been sort of absent from projects for the past few years (moving from one side of the country to the other and shifting from one greenhouse to another does that to you...), but I'd like to reengage...

Sure!! I was thinking of getting this thing going sometime around mid-late March, since it'll still be too cold for some people to order anything before April. You name will be the first on the sign-up list
