zigo's - Winter rest? Male
Default zigo's - Winter rest?

Hello, my friends
Is it normal for zigos to slow down their growth in winter, even if the growing room is warm?

i hope that you are able to figure something out for this plant. my zygo grew and bloomed last winter, then dropped all its leaves in march and has been nothing more than a pot of pseudobulbs since then. i have no idea what i did wrong.

When I was a kid in coastal southern California, the proprietors at Paul Brecht Orchids on Harbor Boulevard in Costa Mesa told me the species were considered challenging because of summer heat, but that they enjoyed fall, winter and spring outdoors in bright shade. That is not a warm part of California. I was also told not to let them dry out, and to keep them as humid as possible. Maybe a very cool and moist winter would be the thing to try.

I know the intergeneric hybrids are supposed to be easier than the species. Do you gentlemen have hybrids, or species? I know summers for both of you are much hotter than Costa Mesa.

Mine are growing and still flowering, temps are at a max 20c and more likely 14-16c, they definitely have slowed down, but there is only 7 hours of daylight and not much sun to speak of at this time of the year. As estacion_seca stated mine are still kept moist (I would say even wet, after watering), they appear to be real water lovers.

I don't know if mine is a specie or hybrid, never saw it's flowers. I got this pbulb last may and it grew a shoot. Now seems stagnant. It has good roots under the medium.
I keep it moist and in temps between 18-24ºC (approx 65-75 F).
I was convinced they were whole-year growers. Hence my question.

Some photos:

Since this is a cool to intermediate grower I've moved it to a room with a north window, bright light, temps between 55 and 62 F (13-17 C) and HR 60 to 70%.

That is perfect
I just leave mine out. Gets down to the high 40s here in LA some nights and it is just fine along with my Cymbidium

And do you notice a slow down (or even stop) of their growing in winter?

They usually go into a slower growth mode
But not completely
They grow all winter and spring and flowers in summer
Our daytime temps usually reach to upper 60s and low 70s in summer
In summary I grow them next to my Cymbidiums

Mine stopped growing new leaves but its roots are growing in "stealth mode". Under the medium there are a lot of thick roots.
I can't put it with my cymbs (I think) 'cause they stand extremes (a few days bellow freezing and months over high 90's.

I get those temps (60s and low 70s) by middle April. So I expect to have visible growth a little before that.
