Hello from the Garden State - new to the orchid board

Hi everyone. What a great find! My wife and I have been nurturing our 'growing obsession' for a few years now and have just passed the 250 mark recently. We are growing with modest success in our backyard greenhouse and indoor bloom room. (bloom room pic attached)

I knew things were getting serious when we devoted an entire construction project to creating a happy environment for our 'in-bloom' orchids along with our phals, paphs and phrags. We basically added three skylights and a southfacing casement window and the results have been very encouraging.

Our path to orkaddiction was atypical. Our gateway drug was not a Phal, but a successful re-bloom of a Cymbidium we got from Joe Silva at Silva Orchid's in NJ. It was probably as much to do with the quality of Joe's plants as it was our dumb luck, but in short we evolved to cats and vandas as our favorites, with masdevallia an emerging favorite as well. We seem to like trying to grow the hard ones. We haven't killed all that many either. Yet.

So I very much look forward to reading, posting, responding, and intereracting with all of you. If you're near the jersey shore give us a shout and say hello.

Welcome! I'm up in Bridgewater but we go to the DCOS show in February every year. Pretty much the only place I pick up new orchids.

I wish I would have realized he was speaking tonight. I would have worked my schedule to be able to attend. Is he bringing plants?

Yes. Fred is bringing plants to the NJOS meeting tonight. I pre-ordered one (10% discount) .

Keep on eye on the NJOS website (njorchids.org) for the speakers and planned events. Speakers are usually posted a couple of months in advance.

Your set up looks wonderful especially in the winter months. You are even equipped with humidifiers....But your grow zone is very hot and humid in the summers so you may also put your plants outdoors.
