Default Orchids are another beast. Hello all!

Hi everyone!

After reading Orchid Board for years I finally decided to join. You all are so wise and wonderful!

I grow containerized hardy landscape plants for a living, mostly outdoors, with a bit of greenhouse growing in the early parts of the season. There are some fussy plants that hate container culture, but for the most part landscape plants grow like weeds. Get 'em outside as fast as possible, plug 'em into irrigation, and walk away. I'm over simplifying it a bit but not by that much...

Orchids are another beast. Of course, that's why I love them. No matter how much I think I know about plants, orchids find a way to make me feel like a beginner. I love them for it. It's pure learning and the reward is immense.

I've had orchids around the house for about 4 years, and my fixation has been steadily growing, constrained only by my budget (emotional, spatial, and financial!) I've a mix of hybrids and species, and I like pretty much everyone. Haven't really found one or another genus that I favor. The more the merrier! I especially enjoy large flowers and large plants, though space limitations have convinced me that minis and compact plants aren't so bad either...

I've started to give away my other houseplants to make room for orchids. I had been warned that it would happen and I was dubious, yet here I am.

Anyway, hi everyone!

Welcome! In many ways orchids really are a world away from terrestrial plants. I also found orchids after years of growing food, landscape, and traditional houseplants but I’m not ready to give away my indoor jungle to make room for more. That’s some serious dedication! Haha

In the interest of full disclosure: I've mostly given away rooted cuttings in order to make room for their larger mothers to come back inside after summer vacation... I think it still counts lol

Hi! Great to have you here!
There are so many wonderful plants but too little space....
Years ago, I got rid of many of my other tropical plants to make room for my orchids and really regretted it...and ended up eventually replacing these plants. I now have a nice balance between the two. Good luck!
