I went to the farmer's market just to see what was in season and ended up with 3 new plants. Lucky for me, orchids are always in season here it seems. Most are grown in Monterey Bay I think.
I have been wanting an oncidium twinkle type forever, and luckily I got the last one at the first vendor I visited. It was in poor shape with wrinkled bulbs and was dropping blooms, though the scent was still present and very similar to the sharry baby I have. It was priced at $8, but the vendor offered it to me for $6 instead. I'm sure she was tired of hauling it around for so long. I regret not getting some of the other small oncidiums and dendrobiums they had, so I'll be back next week. The flowers are a light pink with a yellow center. Any ideas? Oncidium Tsiku Marguerite?
The second orchid vendor I went to sells mostly phals, though he also had some mini cattleyas this time as well. I will probably get one next time. He always has a nice selection of young blooming phals for $6. I didn't think I wanted anymore phals, but I saw one with a basal keiki and was immediately intrigued, even though they are usually red flags. The flower doesn't really do anything for me, but I'm sure it will put on a show once the plant matures.
I also picked up another white phal with faint stripes and a deep pink lip. It was his last one of that type, and I had never see a phal with flowers that close together on the spike. I have been wanting of those large white phals with the pink blush and red lip, so this should satisfy that desire.
I doubt those phals will ever get IDs, but does anyone know what species/hybrids contribute to such closely placed flowers? The blooms don't exactly alternate on either side of the spike. I think I like that trait.
