First-timer, question on names!
Arrow First-timer, question on names!

Hello there. c: I'm new to the world of orchid ownership, but I'm already totally, hopelessly addicted. I bought my first mini-phal three days ago, repotted it tonight (as per advice received on these forums) and might be going out to pick up a new (larger) orchid tonight. I'm hoping to get a nice shelf set-up in my room with a decent variety in the next few days. c: ANYWAY. I'm rambling. I came to ask about my baby's name!

I've done some reading on names of orchids, and I understand what a "noID" orchid is. The mini phal I bought was tagged with the name "Dtps. Long Pride Green Pixie" and I know that the "Doritaenopsis" is now more or less just understood to be the same thing as a "Phalaenopsis". I was wondering ... is there any way I can look up my orchid's ancestry based on the name on its tag? To find its parents? Or where it originated? Or to validate that this is in fact its real name? I'm curious!

It's very pretty. Be careful, once these guys get under your skin they are an incureable disease. It sounds like it is already way too late to save you, but I had to try. Plan on getting the sweats every time you see a new beauty and go buy a huge notebook so that you have plenty of paper for your "must have" list. Anyway, I can't help with the name, but welcome to our corner of the addiction/disease.

Long Pride Green Pixie. =
Dtps. Sogo Gotris x Phal. Stone Dance.

Dtps = Doritaenopsis is a hybrid between Dorita and Phalaenopsis

Dtps. Sogo Gotris = Phal. Be Tris x Dtps. Sogo Manager

Phal. Stone Dance. = Phalaenopsis Su-An Cricket X Phal equestris.

Phal equestris = species

Phal. Be Tris = Phal Be Glad x equestris

Dtps. Sogo Manager = Phal. Brother Lawrence x Phal Autumn Sun

Phal. Brother Lawrence = Phal Taipei Gold X Phal deventeriana.

Phal. Autumn Sun = ?

Phal. Taipei Gold = ?

Phal deventeriana = species

Phal. Su-An Cricket = Phal Gelblieber x mannii)

Phal mannii = species

Phal. Gelblieber = Phal. amboinensis. x Phal. micholitzii.

Phal. amboinensis = species

Phal. micholitzii = species

there are the parents down to the species maybe I was having fun. You can fill in the blanks I got tired

@Val: Thanks for the link! There's a listing for D. Long Pride Green Pixie in the International Orchid Register. But the orchid in that second site you linked looks so much like mine--even the slight way the leaf tips curl down and the little bump on the flowers' lips. That's strange! Is it more likely that my orchid is actually P. Sogo Gold Tris? I looked that one up but there's no listing in the register for that one. ... I'm almost even more confused now! Haha.

@Daethen: Oh, I'm definitely a lost cause by this point haha. I spent a good two hours this afternoon just driving around from place to place, looking at different stores' and nurseries' orchid selection and studying all their different characteristics and seeing which stores had ID'd orchids, which were noID's and which ones were in the best shape. I'm definitely obsessed. (: How could anyone not be?

@RJSquirrel: WOW. That's quite the breakdown, thanks! I'll definitely have fun going in and filling in the blanks. c: Did you see the image/link that Val posted? Do you think there was a mistake in my plants' tagging, and that it's actually that one, instead? I don't know if mistakes in naming/tagging are common, or if there's some orchids that look that similar to other types?

Hm! I just noticed something peculiar! My orchid was marked as Dtps. Long Pride Green Pixie. The International Orchid Register has the seed parent for Dtps. Long Pride Green Pixie listed as P. Sogo Gotris. ... That orchid in the Long Pride Photo Gallery looks a lot like mine and has the name P. Sogo Gold Tris. P. Sogo Gold Tris and P. Sogo Gotris, sound like very similar names ... is it possible this is more than coincidence? What should I make of it? And is there always this much confusion/sleuthing involved in orchid identifying? Haha. Not that I mind, it's fun. I just wanna know what my 'chid's name is. c:

so many do look alot alike. if the name on the tag is questionably or obviously wrong, the chances of really ever without a doubt figuring out what it is goes right next to time travel

Accept the tagged named until PROVEN otherwise is my own best choise on those matters.

They can spot bad tagged plants in here and help a lot within a given range of question. As you can see it gets very complex very fast and with the 2 ?'z missed that could add 20, 30, 40 more plants into the pileup . Im new and am learning tooo.

Thanks for the help, RJSquirrel. I'm having a blast digging into my plant's history and looking at the names/appearances of its ancestors. Maybe a little too much fun? Haha. I've attached a picture of the family tree I'm working on building for my little Phal. What do you guys think? 8D It's a good thing the Orchid Register appears to be down because I have an essay for school to write!
