Default Denphal ancestry

So Denphals are crosses between dendrobiums and phalenopsis? Is the den parent the den nobile? And I presume sympodial is the dominant trait since the phal parent is monopod.

No, the "phalaenopsis-type" Dendrobium is named for the species Den bigibbum (that used to be called "Den. phalaenopsis") that apparently reminded someone of a Phalaenopsis. (I don't think it's even close) It's the dominant ancestor of this group of hybrids. But Dendrobium and Phalenopsis are quite unrelated and certainly don't interbreed.

Are denphals crosses between dendrobiums and phalaenopsis or is it just because the flowers are borne on long flower stems similar to phalaenopsis. Is it possible to cross breed sympodials and monopodials? Please disregard this post. I thought the previous one was lost.

Roberta, Thanks for the explanation.
