Total tag failure. Please help ID
Default Total tag failure. Please help ID

So I was putting off this project for a while. I have a lot of catts and many are unruly and grow sideways and I so I just kept turning them and adjusting pots and putting off the task of dealing with them.

Fast forward a few years and I am getting to it. Last night I went to repot one and the tag literally fell into chips and then dust…..thanks UV rays!

I got this pic but never found the front of the tag. I can’t find any plants online with the exact name but I know that variety names are often not included

Any help is appreciated

Can it simply be Cattleya lueddemanniana fma. semi-alba?

Well that is what is will be hahaha

I can see it was a cross between two forms which suggests it might just be a semi alba

Some folks here are so good at the registered websites and the crosses that I thought I’d ask

Hard to say what that tag means at the moment. It just appears to be indicating a var semi-alba crossed with 'SB' ---- and maybe SB stands for 'Sib' or sibling. So the origins are that the parents came from the same batch (or clone ----- same flask). And somebody crossed it. So overall ---- if the orchid is a species and it is lueddemannia ---- then, it could just be called C. lueddemannia ..... regardless of cross with sibling.

And - not sure why the details at this link here has discrepancies with the name.

Link

In one spot, it says lueddemanniana ..... while in a different spot, it says lueddemannia.

Thanks buddy

I suppose if it is not an awarded specific plant from the nursery’s Catt ludde(..) semi Alba self crosses then it is still just

Cattleya lueddemanniana fma. semi-alba

As a clever member already said before….

SB is also shorthand used on a lot of Laelia [especially anceps] tags; ie SB alba, SB Giant, etc.--they're fully San Bar alba, San Bar Giant, etc.; they're all clonal references referring to specific awarded plants [and divisions thereof] originating from the collection/breeding program at Santa Barbara Orchid Estate [hence San Bar]

DC ----- I forgot to add ---- I know what you mean about those crazy thin plastic tags! I kept some orchids with the original tags like that in the past, and fortunately used my excel spread-sheet system to store the names of the orchids ---- as those crazy thin tags did exactly that ---- just break up into little pieces after some time from UV damage.

I generally use the icy-pole thicker style tag for most of the orchids, printed with UV resistant sticker labels from a brother PT-P700 label printer. Amazingly, those UV resistant labels haven't failed me at all. Impressive. I just have to make sure I order the correct type of label --- the UV resistant kind.

Nice info! Although ----- does that short hand usually appear within the single quotes area eg. L.anceps 'San Bar Giant' ----- L. 'S B Giant' ? Or C. trigrina 'S B Giant' etc
