Hi Orchid friends,

I bought 2 exotic noid orchids from trader joes recently. This is the 2nd time I've got a non phal orchid. First time I got miltoniopsis that died but now I want to make sure these survive. Please help identify these orchids and also share information on how to take care of them. Should I repot them immediately or wait until blooms fall off? How well do oncidiums handle repotting? I think one is an oncidium(dancing lady) for sure it has flower spike that hasnt bloomed yet. Im hoping that its a hybrid from sharry baby. I dont get any smell from the buds or even one of flowers that bloomed.does sharry baby give out fragrance? The other pink flowered orchid has a mild fragrance and I can smell it very close. Is there a particular time of the day when oncidiums are more fragrant?

Thank you 💕

Both are Oncidium intergenerics. They are good choices for many home growers. When you repot these in spike or flower you usually lose the flowers, so don't do that. Do some reading first. You will not want to repot until they begin making new growths.

Find out what the current medium is. If it's sphagnum, don't thoroughly soak it when you water. Just run water briefly over the top for a second or two. Water again when the sphagnum is almost but not fully dry.

Thank you for your response. I will wait and repot when I see new pseudo bub growth. The potting media is a mix of bark chips and sphagnum moss. I think the seedling plug inside is of sphagnum moss. I wil be careful to not over water. And will do a little bit of reading about oncidiums. .

I’m pretty sure the first shots are Odtna. Pacific Paranoia “other side of cool”. Google and compare.

The second one could be many things. Post photos after the flowers are more developed and in better light and I may be able to suggest some possibilities. They will remain just possibilities though because there are many hybrids Oncidium alliance hybrids with that orange/red colouring and they are hard to tell apart.

Wow your guess seems to be perfect. Thank you so much for the help. I think I got few better pictures. I'm posting them now.

For identifying your second orchid - its not really possible because there are too many hybrids that look similar to be confident.

So what I do with ‘NOIDs’ is find a well known hybrid that looks similar and label it as a ‘like’.

For example, Odontocidium Sunny Daze is very simiilar and currently popular among commercial growers. So I would label this plant:

Oncidium LIKE Odtcm. Sunny Daze.

That tells me all I need to know. I don’t like having unidentified plants in my collection least I accidentally give a favourite away (when not flowering) or buy too many similar looking plants, but as soon as I see that label I know all I need too.

Because I grow in slotted pots I loose a lot of labels. I sometimes think all my plants are slowly noiding themselves.

I would grow yours under general Oncidium conditions but spare it from hot weather as it appears to have a Cochloidea parent, which are high altitude plants in the main.

Also, people can give you better advice if you put your location in your bio.
Cheers
