Is this even an orchid?
Default Is this even an orchid?

My son purchased this as a gift from a grocery store. The flowers died off so I cut back the long stem. But I don’t understand why it started growing off side and old leaves turned yellow. So I took off the dying leaves. It keeps growing but I can’t find any orchid pictures online that look like this at base. I’m totally lost but would like to figure out if I have an orchid and if so am I doing something wrong?

It's an orchid... I am guessing a Zygopetalum hybrid. They do tend to lose leaves... it looks like you have a nice flower spike on the way though. After it blooms, you should consider repotting it... if it's losing leaves, I'd be concerned that the roots are in bad condition due to bad medium. THey do produce new growth along a rhizome... so the leafless pseudobulbs are the old ones, and they are the energy stores for new growth. Keep them as long as they are firm and green... they will keep the plant going while it produces new growth and new roots. When you repot you will be able to recenter the plant... put the oldest pseudobulb against the side of the pot so that the new growth has the maximum amount of space... but use the same size pot or perhaps just a bit bigger. Don't over-pot.

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

Yes, it is making more flowers. That's the tallest new growth.

And there is a new growth with leaves.
