Need help identifying this wild orchid!
Default Need help identifying this wild orchid!

Hi all, I am Eden from Sikkim, India and this is my first post. I am kind of a beginner I guess in orchids and wanted some help. I brought home this orchid from a hike and have no idea what it's called. It was on a fallen tree branch and i got home the whole thing, couldn't resist. It's been blooming for me for 3 years now with no care whatsoever! Would really appreciate it if someone could help identify the orchid. Thanks.

That is a Coelogyne of some kind. I am fairly certain that it is Coelogyne nitida.

Nice find, Eden! It's beautiful.

Afid, what is the difference between C. nitida and C. corymbosa? From what I can tell, they seem quite similar, but it seems like C. nitida has a broader lip. Can you explain other differences?

I'm not entirely sure to be honest, let me do some more research.

It is tough to tell, the main difference seems to be in the shape of the lip callus, which is more prominent and slightly ragged-edged in C. corymbosa and less pronounced and smooth in C. nitida. I am pretty sure this is the latter species.

Eden if you want a more definitive ID, some close up pictures of the lip throat and some of the entire plant would help a lot!

Here is an article describing a new Coelogyne species, but it also has a key to the species in the section Ocellatae (which both C. nitida and C. corymbosa are in).

Coelogyne
magnifica (Orchidaceae), a new species from northern Myanmar

Thank you guys ! Wasn't expecting a reply but so many of you took out the time I did some research on my own lol and found out that it's probably #coelogyne nitida because it is supposed to be native to this region. I also have #coelogyne cristata on a tree in our garden . I am attaching photos of the nitida although I am not sure if they are attached. Still learning my way around this forum . But thanks again.
