Encyclia cordigera var rosea?
Default Encyclia cordigera var rosea?

Hi all,

I saw this in a nursery and it resembles encyclia cordigera var rosea but its sepal and petal seems to stretch backward.

Anyone has any idea whether this is actually the species itself or it is a hybrid. I have to stuck my nose to its flower to get its fragrant.

Thank you in advance

A shame that a nursery wouldn't label their plants!

I don't know enough about Encyclia to say what it may or may not be, but reflexing flower parts can be due to the plant being a poor specimen or due to environmental factors.

Sure is pretty though!

Looks like a hybrid - with belizensis, maybe. Nice color but not great form.

Thanks Camille and Ray.

I will assume it as hybrid with NoID then.

Hi Ray, you mentioned not great form. What characteristics that those orchid judges is looking at that determine that it has nice forms? Does the nice form standard also varies by genus?

Yes, it varies all over the map, and I'm not a trained judge, but often the "quality" of the hybrid is judged as to whether it is an improvement over the parents, and with the lip being much smaller than the E. cordigera and the swept-back petals and sepals (top-most blossom in the photo), I'd think there could be better versions out there.

It's just an opinion...
