Smile Phal. Jong's Gigan Cherry 'Prince'

I have a Phal. Jong's Gigan Cherry 'Prince' (Phalaenopsis gigantea × Phalaenopsis Kung's Red Cherry) incoming and I'm sooo incredibly excited, this hybrid is simply absolutely stunning. However it's being shipped in moss, and I'm personally not a fan of Phals in moss. Question: I’ve heard that giganteas don’t like being repotted. Yet, Id like repot it as soon as it arrives. I'm considering using clay pellets/leca. Is this a good idea? What should I keep in mind for gigantea hybrids? Should I wait until the plant has adjusted to its new environment or rather wait till spring? And is it true that they prefer brighter light than most Phals?

May thanks fpr your help, youjre the best!

howdy! while we are no experts, we do have some opinions on phals in moss!!! hahahaha.

like you, we don't do phals in moss...and our experience has been that leaving in them in moss, even for a couple months, will put them behind phals that we repot into bark and leca immediately when we get them. even if the repotting happens in mid-winter!

forget about the fact that it has gigantea in it, just treat it as any other hybrid phal and repot it once you get it if that's what you normally do.

give it as much light as you can in the winter and then move to bright shade in the heat of summer. otherwise, no need to do anything different, imho...good luck!

I follow the advice of Peter Lin of Big Leaf… i give new phals a couple weeks to a month to adjust to new conditions, then repot when I see new growth.

Most phals do best for me in bark but I haven’t found that a couple weeks in moss is detrimental, and occasionally I have had a plant stall after immediate repotting.
