Can a phal spike produce blooms a second time? Male
Default Can a phal spike produce blooms a second time?

I have this rather large NoID phal that has previously produced large yellow flowers that last a long time (I have included 2 pictures of the same spike in bloom taken 27 Jan. 2024). This same spike is still dark green and appears very healthy with no sign of it being old and brown. However, there are no buds present. There are no other spikes on the plant.

My questions are these--1. Can this same large spike produce blooms again? 2. Or should I cut the spike off as if it were old and brown?

If you have any suggestions, please tell me what to do.

You can cut the spike or not, it’s sort of your choice. Unless a spike is really in the way, I usually leave it until it turns dry and brown. Sometimes you can get new buds, even months or years later, and leaving it might give the plant the opportunity to re- absorb the nutrients snd chlorophyll.

I have at least one Phal that blooms from old spikes for at least 3 years.
A good practice is to cut them when they turn brown.
