Here is an awesome tip I have used at conferences and depositions and even once when a client had to be shown to be delivering his alimony in person. People are embarrassing


So what you do is place a phone or recorder on the lectern or near the speaker and then when you make the video for demonstration you use the video from wherever with the audio from the “near” mic

Never record anyone without their knowledge and consent.

I can't be certain, but I would expect that Alan is using RO. Where he can get away with using tap water, with copious flushing, for most of his plants, that doesn't work for Den. cuthbertsonii. For those of us who live in "not wonderful water" land, without enough rain to utilize rainwater reliably, RO becomes the standard for "good water". I would expect Den. cuthbersonii to do nicely with the same water quality demanded by all of those wonderful Pleurothallids that you grow.

What impressed me about his growing arrangement was that he was able to get enough evaporative cooling to grow them with the heat that he experiences. They have a reputation for really disliking heat. (I am still trying to grow some... they're still alive but not doing very well, so I am intrigued by those who can push the limits and get away with it)

I'm pretty sure at one point when he was talking about "pure water" he used the term RO. Most likely, with as many plants as he has that he flushes with "pure water" afterward. I wouldn't think he'd just depend on a rain source, regardless of climate, with that much plant investment. But rain or RO would suffice, I'd think.

Roberta, WaterWitchin, thank you very much Our tap water contain only 70-90 ppm. But for my pleurothalides I use distillate water.
Most of my friends who love D.cuthbertsonii grow them in New Zealand moss on the south window is constantly wet. And they grow well.
But I know one person who keeps them dry, gradually accustoming them to dryness, watering them after drying the substrate. In high temperature. And according to him, they grow well with him.

The link I posted above contains my notes from when he spoke to our club in 2017. He addressed Den. cuthbertsonii at some length. This time, Thursday June 18 2020, he mentioned it only in response to my question. His topic this time was Cattleya.

He said he uses RO to flush his cuthbertsonii 25-30 minutes after watering and fertilizing. He said they are in the cooler eastern part of a greenhouse, but it still gets well over 100 F / 38C on many summer days. They have survived much higher temperatures with equipment failure. His greenhouses are humid.

After one year I have my own blooming Cattleya Magic Meadow x Laelia cardimii



And today all three flowers bloom.
