orchids spent he first night in there last night and everyone is happy, since the lean too is facing a sliding glass door to my house, i have the door open most of the time, it is just lovely since the fogger spills some much needed humidity into my house, but at much lower levels than the orchid house gets, also i think having the door open in upping circulation a bit and keeping the temps a bit more stable, my tracker shows like spikes in the temp and the heaters cycle off and on. not that they were bad to start with, but i like the set up.

i currently have a oil radiator at one end set medium low that is just keeping things stable and a very nice sealed electric with internal fan set on a remote thermal switch that i change for night and day. im working on giving my plants a good 15 degree shift since i think that is the one thing they have sorely been lacking and is my hunk for general lack of flowering. i have way too many plants with wonderful growth and no flowers for years.

off to go find a good small fan for out there, all the ones that are sealed to the moisture levels are also way too big for the space and needs. probably just go with some cheep small ones and be ok with them getting trashed by humidity sooner than better ones would.

any other suggestions?

Insulating the greenhouse

I was looking at you structure closer, and it finally dawned on my that, looking at your deck, you could live in my apartment building! My deck is configured exactly like yours down to the sliding glass door. I had often wondered about constructing a greenhouse lean-to, exactly like what you did, on my deck. OOOOH, how I have wanted to do something like that. Now I just have to make my partner a little more sick of orchids, and then 'suggest' that I move them out on the deck. :evil: He has allergies and he can't go out there except for about 5 days out of the year anyway!

Sounds like a good plan! I'm kicking myself for not figuring this lean to over a sliding door thing a long time ago, it would have lives of a handful of orchids when I first moved east.
So nice for being able to have them nearby and still give them their own conditions (and not rot your house out).
Having the door of the house open the leentoo makes it seem a lot bigger than it would if there was a wall there, plus more flexible in its placement since I could block the door on the end, or in my case just not include it at all.


Two warnings, may small leanto will need to be lifted up on a base to clear the door, for mine it was a super easy fix with some 2x6's
Secondly the outside measurements are not always like they say. I even called my place and it still ended up a handful of inches bigger than they said. If you buy one that fits tightly, double triple check that it fits.

Thanks for the heads-up on the measurements and door height. Unfortunately I tentatively ran the idea past my partner - who, by the way, HATES CHANGE - He immediately blocked with "where will we grill out". He has a point as we live on the second floor and we have very limited space for the grill. I doubt the orc's would like to smell like grilled salmon with lemon sauce! But I still have time to figure out something for everyone, then take a few months to give my partner reasons for me to move them out. (I only hope he wants me to move them to the balcony and not the dumpster. :whistling)
