Part of the problem with growing some fruits in an orchid house is that, once the fruits ripen, they can produce gases that promote bud drop in orchids.
Ripe apples in the house, for instance, can cause bud drop like crazy. I have heard that ripe bananas can do that too, and I imagine that tomatoes could as well.
I grow my tomatoe seedlings in the gh but then move them to a separate light table in a totally separate room in my house once they get buds.
I don't believe that citrus can cause similar problems because they don't work the same way that the fleshy fruits do, as far as decay and seed support.
Apples and similar fruits,(like pears), actually even produce cyanide from the seeds, not in HUGE abundance, but enough that it's appropriate to keep them away from your orchids and to avoid letting a horse get loose beneath an apple tree that has a lot of windfall apples under there!

Yes, I know.
MASSIVE fruit trivia here.
My mind just spun out of control there for a minute!

tomatoes and orchids??? well, yes...first off let me tell you that i take 3months here with greenhouse, and 3months there (okla to visit honey) and i do miss my greenhouse. while i am there, mom and pop take care of the greenhouse. this year, we started some (about 250) tomatoes and the same number of peppers in late jan because i had to leave....and i couldnt leave the folks to do all the planting.......well, when i came back in april i had HUGE tomato plants and pepper plants and i think all of em came up. my orchids were all jammed back in the back and it looked like a tomato jungle! they were over a foot tall and in 6" pots! bearing fruit! well, not one to look a gift horse in the mouth i started in to selling tomato plants....5 dollars a pop....and did i ever sell a bunch of tomatos! i ended up planting 70 plants, and covered the cost of several months heating propane. not bad. the orchids didnt suffer a bit. maybe i was just lucky cause i didnt run into any bugs at all. this year there wont be nearly so many tomatoes in the greenhouse. the 70 i planted worked us to death harvesting, canning, selling at the market, etc. so much for tomatoes with orchids. the peppers had a few aphids after i moved em out of the greenhouse, but i neemed and soaped em to death. igonorance is bliss.....

I've heard that most tomatoes are actually carriers of tomatoe mosiac virus, and I suppose that could be a potential problem.. Tomatoes aren't grown for beauty but for ediblity so virused tomatoes really aren't a big deal for most gardeners.. however they would be a huge deal for orchid growers especially because they are such a magnet for pests.. I err on the side of caution and start and grow my tomatoes in a different area all together. On a lighter note, I grow Dragonfruit, Citrus, Palmagranite, Aloe, 4 large Hibiscus, and loads of other tropicals in my greenhouse as well.

Lerner, Tomatoes are a no no. They produce ethylene gas when they ripen and that can have a negative effect on your orchid flowers. I am not sure about othr fruit which might do the same. To be on the safe side, I don't grow any fruit but do have some cacti and succulents along side my chids. Betty

We have gotten lots of recommendations on what NOT to grow in a g/house and a wonderful variety of plants that people grow and enjoy that are compatible with their orchids. Thank you all!
And I learned that there are some areas where too much information does exist. Thanks for the humor Bolero.
