Noid den-phal with new growth on old cane? Female
Default Noid den-phal with new growth on old cane?

I have a noid den-phal that my husband bought me last fall from the supermarket. This poor thing has really been through the wringer but has made quite the comeback. It had no live roots so as much as it pained me to do so, I cut off the blooms, staked it and hoped for the best. I accidentally scraped off an eye trying to remove some of the old, dried leaf tissue. About a month later it started putting out another new growth which the mice in our old rental home (landlord was more of a scumlord despite the premium rent we were paying ) promptly ate. This plant is a real fighter though and somehow managed to grow 2 new canes, one of which I believe is putting out a spike. I just noticed that one of the old canes is putting out some new growth near the top of the cane. Since I know next to nothing about this plant I would really appreciate it if someone could assist me with what's going on. I was under the impression that the old canes on den-phals were really only there to help nourish the new growth...

I have a noid den where the old stems throw off new plants, keikis(?) I think they're called.

I've used them over the years to start new containers and give-aways.
I just took a couple 'babies' yesterday and set them in the branches of a ficus tree.

I can't tell from the pictures (yet) if your new growth are keikis or not. But that cane doesn't look all that "spent".
And I've had my den grow another flower stalk after the 1st one died back.

Keep doing what you're doing!
You show be able to tell more in about a week, I think.

Thank you I would be thrilled if they turned out to be keikis, this has (in my opinion) the loveliest lavender blooms. I'm pretty sure one of the newer canes is putting out a spike although considering what it's been through, I'm not expecting many blooms if that is indeed what it is.

The growth in the first photo is quite small, but if I were to take a guess, I would guess keiki, same as Chuck.

Second photo - spike! congratulations!

Thank you! Yes, today was the first day I noticed the 2 little nubbins. Idk why but for some reason I thought that only the dens requiring a winter's rest put out keikis. I should have done more research but I honestly didn't expect it to live and once it started doing well I just figured "eh, I must be doing something right" and left it at that. Admittedly a very lazy attitude I am definitely going to invest some time in doing better research.

They do bloom off of old canes, as long as the canes are green. The Phal Dens are amazing.

You mentioned that yours is lavender in color and it made me get outside and mess around (stare at them endlessly) with my NoID Den.

I took a few pics while outside and when I get around to opening a new post I'll upload a crap load, but I thought I'd share one here if you don't mind....

It looks like a combination of {orchids are really tough plants} and {it got really good care from a good grower.}

I don't mind a bit, quite the opposite in fact. I could look at pictures of orchids ALL day lol. Yours is gorgeous! Thank you so much for sharing.
