Dendrobium Warawan - Orchid Board

A nice antelope type den. Seems to have a light fragrance, but I'll have to wait till tomorrow to be sure.

Just purchased from Trader Joe's.

I've been looking for a nice evergreen den I liked and this fit the bill.

However.... how do I care for it?
I'm mainly worried about temps.

Terrible pictures. It's large and doesn't fit under my light well.
So tomorrow I'll shoot for better shots.

Someone please tell me if the photo quality is terrible. I can't tell on tapatalk.

The quality is not terrible, and it's a beautiful orchid. Couldn't help but notice your nobile in the background budding out! ;-)

Good... the pictures are terrible though lol.
I was afraid tapatalk was downgrading the quality of my photos.
Might not look so nice on a computer, and since I don't own a computer I can't check lol.

I'm quite in love with it! I have only room for one more orchid on my shelf and I've been waiting two years to find an evergreen dendrobium I wanted and this was it!

Why yes! I have two nobile hybrids that are doing something.
I didn't wanna post another spike or keiki thread so I'm just hoping for flowers.

I also got one from TJ's a year ago. Seems to be a very easy plant.
I grow mine outdoors in summer so temps are high but brought it in for winter 65-75.
From what I understand they don't need a winter rest and prefer not to be too cold. Indoor temps would be fine.

Hmm.... my room gets down to about 50.... maybe colder near that window.
Might be tricky to keep it warm but give it enough light.

It's got an extremely light fragrance.
My boyfriend and I agree it's buttery almost. I think it smells vaguely vanilla like. He smells vague almond.like smell.

We also both agree we can barely detect it even with our noses in the flower!

I have had this plant for a while now and I love it!
It is by far the longest lasting flowers ever! Mine usually spikes and blooms in September, then the flowers stay on until spring, seven months!!!

If you have a common den phal type plant, the care is basically the same, except this plant need higher temperature to do well. Give good light and enough water during the growing season for optimum growths and then good flowering will follow.

If you can keep the plant warm and bright during the winter, this plant will bloom in the spring, making it ever blooming plant.

I saw some of your old posts! Very encouraging.

I do not have a den phal. I have room for one den phal. And I'm holding out for something I like.

Warmer huh.... can they take less light?
Cause my brightest spot is also the coldest.

Antelope types take the most heat to do their best I believe.

The brightest spot should be warm with the sun reaching even the overall air might be colder unless it is really cold.

I wouldn't expose this plant under 65. 60 is probably pushing the limit.

They need very bright light to grow and flower the best. You can give slightly less light, say all morning sun then nothing for the rest of the day if that is something you can do.

Less light will be fine but it will just give you less flowers. but then again, I am not really sure what you mean by less light exactly.

If you grow cattleya, then that's the light this thing needs. If you grow and bloom ondiciums well, then that light level would also suit this plant.

One more note on "colder" you want to keep the plant on the dry side if you have to keep it on the cool side during the winter.

I find that wild this plant is not in active growth, it can take drought quite well. better than I thought compared to other den phal hybrids which are also tough but show wrinkles on the cane when too dry.

Keep the canes fat and water in the morning on warm sunny days to keep the plant well hydrated but avoid problems that may come with cold and damp conditions.

As much as I love this plant, I am thinking of giving it away as it is getting rather too big for me and carrying it around for watering breaks my back. lol
