Dendrobium Yellowish Canes
Exclamation Dendrobium Yellowish Canes

Hi Everyone,

So I just bought a dendrobium aridang blue online and it got shipped with 2 flowers. The most mature cane is about 5in tall with 2 leaves and is the only pseudobulb with leaves. Apart from being a small orchid with blooms, one thing that made me wonder is the colour of its canes. All of them have a bright yellow green colour and if you place those canes towards the light, they are a bit transluscent. They have plump canes and glossy leaves but no active root growth.

A month later (today), the flowers are now done. With winters ahead of us here, I noticed one of the leaves is losing its lustre. Is there anything wrong with the orchid itself or does the color signify that its still young? Does it need more sun or was it receiving too much light? I have a more mature denphal (potted next to it on my balcony) that is dormant too at the moment but it has retained its glossy darker green color even if its staying outdoors at ~10C temp.

It was probably grown in high light. I haven't looked up this plant but if it has a subatantial amount of Den. bigibbum in it, routine 10C temperatures are too low.

I looked this one up... 10 deg C is much too cold for it. All of the species making up this hybrid are warm growers. Tropical. So it should get Phalaenopsis temperatures (inside the house, nights not much below 18 deg C, days quite a bit warmer) but much brighter light than a Phal. So in a sunny window, it will most likely get the light and warmth that it needs. Dendrobium is a huge, and varied genus so it is important to get into the detail of the parentage of the plant to determine correct conditions. (There are lots of Australian Dendrobiums from farther south - like Den. speciosum, kingianum, tetragonum and many more, that are fine with cool temperatures... this one, no.)

Thanks to all these info! I haven’t grown my dendro orchids before outdoors. With my recent purchases, I just don’t have much space indoors and let this poor thing stayed on my balcony. I took it indoors and it seems liking the warmth as I see some fine new roots coming out. I was considering buying Aust native at some point but I just cant be bothered thinking how much space they need when they grow.
