Melatie, there's a guy in Jamaica from Hamlyn Orchids who grows them year round. You may want to google them and have a look see

Where do you live exactly, in the mountains or in a valley, a plain. If you were located in the mountains you could get by with growing a few cyms as long as they received a cooler period. You could grow some of the species types if you live at a lower elevation, probably some of the australian natives. Really depends where you live.

There are some cymbidium species from south east asia which can handle heat and sun pretty well. Cymb. chlorantum, Cymb. finlaysonianum to name a few.

I have one finlaysonianum and when it's starting to have spike, I broke it during repotting....regretted that. It grows under bright light, sometimes withstanding afternoon sun.

There are some hybrids from Thailand which can stand tolerate tropical heat pretty well. Heard from a local grower that Cymb. golden elf can also grow well in hot area.

Have fun hunting Cymbs!

I think there are some in the northern areas of Australia that take a fair amount of heat and the hybrids might grow ok. To be honest although I grow a lot of Cym's I don't know which ones will be ok.

I hope you find some that will work for you.

Yes cymbidiums do grow in the tropics but it has to be the right cymbidium. The guy in Thailand has a web site worth looking at Pakkret Floriculture Co., Ltd. . Not too many people working toward warm growing cymbidiums anymore. Everglades was a good one but does not sell to the public anymore. His website is open though Cymbidium and Oncidium Hybrids from Everglades Orchids . Generally anything 20% or more ensafolium is heat tolerant but there are other combinations "Golden Elf is a good one and is a good one and is half ensafolium. Some of the vendors identify plants that are heat tolerant.

I'd recommend you try ensifolium and madidum hybrids to start with. There is one out of Taiwan called Chen's Ruby that would do well. Golden Elf 'Sundust' and offspring should do ok for you as well. Aloifolium and dayanum are short lived pendulous flowering but very warm tolerant.

Yes you can grow and flower cymbidium in the tropic. Look for hybrids decended from Australian cymbidium madidum and cannaculatrum (forgive me for wrong spelling).

We forgive you....the spelling is 'canaliculatum'

And it does grow quite warm. It has interesting leaves as well, not the standard strap type leaf but thicker.

Thanks for all your replies!!! I'll look in to all the warmth/heat tolerant types u guys mentioned.
I do not live in the mountains or on a hill... ... The coolest period of the day is at night and it doesn't get any cooler than 27/26 degrees celsius.
I do hope I'll find some sort of cymbidium that likes surinamese heat. Anybody from Australia coming this way?...hehehe...
