I have a Slc Hsing Buu-Lady 'VT' that was purchased early this summer mid june.I decided to go to s/h with a bunch of chids and so far all have put out new roots just after the transfer except this one.the others are blc lc ect this is the only slc I have.

The question is what is their growth habit in relation to where and when new roots emerge....this one looks like it puts roots out along the rhisome before the eyes get going where as all my others seem to gro new roots from the base of the new leads.

It already had two good eyes in growth when I got it and they are fair size but it seems to be one that climbs out of the pot and looks like it will make a good amount of rhizome between the growths .....It has been doing pretty good since moving to sh continuing to grow but the old roots looked like they were rotting. Not unexpected. So today I decided to take it out of the s/h and trim up old roots. most are gone or on the way out but it does have one nice new root way down so not too worried yet and it does have a new eye growing from way down below the leca so it is not sulking or actually failing by any means.

Ok ramble done question is do new roots emerge before new leads have leaves , about midway to pb maturity after a leaf has emerged, or after new lead is pretty much mature and pb is fiattening and from what point ---just at the base of pb or along the rhizome itself?

Not familiar with this plant....but I will try to look up the lineage and see when the parent plants flush roots.

ok, I have no idea about your plant in particular, however it is a complex intergeneric hybrid... which means it could behave either way... however, as for your question whether roots are produced when and where: 1) new roots are produced from the new lead. However, old roots, if they are healthy, can branch and produce "new" branches or continue growing. 2) New roots grow from the rhyzome, but under the new PB, and normally not from the internodes (space separating the PBs), but this is not written in stone, e.g. L. anceps has new roots also in the internodes. 3) depending on the species, they can be produced before the new PB has leave or even before it starts growing, it can also be the case that they are produced after the PB is mature. You can also have the variation before or after blooming. However, the most common situation is that they are produced before blooming and while teh PBs is growing but not yet mature.

As I mentioned before, different species behave different, and compex hybrids can do almost everything... Your plant is at least 50% L. anceps, that means it could produce roots in teh internodes, and could produce new roots only after the new PB has a leaf...

Thanks everyone ....

Ramon this plant does produce roots along the internode below the new lead at least on the older growths before this one....so I was kind of expecting that.Which indicates it will be a while yet before new roots emerge thanks for the background info.

It was in bloom when I got it and had to make a 3 or 4 hundred mile trip home and actualy has done pretty good in all blooms stayed on for 2 or 3 weeks before dropping and as you can see has not really lost much ground to have just one realy good root at present.A little shirveling on one pb, but grew the one good root since it went into s/h so hoping that it is on the way back already to plump pbs.

And I did find one more new lead that it has grown since it went into s/h under the hydrotron when I did the clean up so it is not stalled or sulking at all. Oh and the brown spots are mechanicl damage due to wind and such not rot or soft.
