Hi All,
Have several Catts, e.g. C. Marjorie Hauserman 'York', C. Green Emerald, 2 Potinarias, a BLC, and an SC.
My question is, if they are all hybrids with various C. species in their background, how does one know what the cultural reqs. are such as winter rest/no rest and when will they bloom?
Does one of the background species dominate and therefore dictates the bloom schedule and requisite culture?
Look forward to your replies,
BillyC

I don't really know the answer, but I think generally you get characteristics that range between those of the parents.

This is aparently true in many phals, a species may have a narrow band of temps is likes, but a hybrid of it with something that likes different temps will have a much larger band of temps it likes... similar with the other requirements.

I think that when you get a complex hybrid the cultural specifics end up being minimized. Watch their growth behavior and it could give a clue to the need for a winter rest or no rest.

Some websites selling cattleyas give information about their culture and rest period. I know about C. Green Emerald that it needs a rest period from November - February, moderately damp. Here is the link to this information: Cattleya Green Emerald Orchid Queen - Großräschener Orchids
