Cattleya walkeriana inside or outside Male
Default Cattleya walkeriana inside or outside

hi everybody: I am enriching my collection of walkeriana and two plants are now flowering. so far they are on the terrace with temperatures of 10 C as a minimum and 16/18 C as a maximum.

Do I leave them outside or do I take them to the glass-enclosed veranda facing south-west where the temperature ranges from 16 to 20C?

Thank you for your answers

I think that sounds a touch on the cool side to me so I think I'd do the veranda. Just don't put them too close to the glass so they don't burn.

The plants will be just fine with that low. C. walkeriana can handle even lower than that if kept relatively dry. Regarding the flowers, however, I'd agree with Keysguy. Your veranda might be a better location for the plants while they're in bloom.

You're probably right SM.
I always forget that I'm spoiled.
It's overcast and down to 77F and I'm sitting here contemplating if I should go see if I can find my hoodie.

Yes, you are. What you call "cool" is what I call "spring." In a few months from now I'll envy you, however.

I was in Miami in late October. People wore snow parkas in the morning, and put sweaters on their dogs. I would guess it got all the way down to 68 F / 20C.

I was stationed in Puerto Rico for two years, and they did the same thing there. During January and February the only people you saw at the beach were guys like me from either the Midwest or the Northeast. Everyone else stayed indoors to wait out the "cold."

Mine seems to be doing ok down into the low 40oF (5 oC) in San Diego. The buds started to open up this morning.

It certainly makes me chuckle to see people in full winter jackets and mufflers when it's still in the 60s in southern California. It's still short-sleeve weather for me! I miss all the lake effect snow around the great lakes. I recall snow by Halloween time over there.

Not sure you'd miss what's going on in upstate NY right now. I know I sure don't!

I mean I miss it because I’m not there any more

But yeah it does seem pretty crazy over there. Hope everyone is safe and warm!
