Schom splendida ‘Waldors Candy Apple’

I got this last year as a large 3 bulb division. I was pretty careful with it last year because didn’t know how it would handle our winter, and it’s too big to bring inside.

Anyways, it seems to be doing just fine, there’s another bulb behind it that’s sending out a spike. It was on the top shelf but had to move it down to avoid the spike hitting the ceiling

Yes, they do send up tall spikes. Dave Off has a good selection (partly acquired from the defunct Lois Duffin Orchids).

Expect that I will see some of them tomorrow, as I am visiting Waldor AND attending Dave's backyard sale.

and remember compared to tibincis and grandiflora that is a SHORT spike LOL

upon looking again what i really like is the 'firework' appearance like it went up and exploded in flowers!!

I have probably a progeny of Miller's short for my tibicinis - which is nice because spike is rarely more than 5 feet, and can be as short as 3.

Long spikes are like my jam - at this point beyond anceps - like half of my orchids are schombos or cyrtochillums

That's an excellent spike of blooms. The length of the spikes on the myrmecophilas is fascinating.

Just a note... What used to be all Schomburgkia (based on those nice ripple-edged flowers) has been split into Myrmecophila (with large, hollow pseudobulbs for those friendly ants), like Mcp. tibicinis, and all the rest are now considered Laelia (such as L. splendida, L. superbiens, L. lueddemanniii and a bunch of others). Those do have distinctly different, more Laelia-like pseudobulbs. But all of them can have monster spikes. So the genus Schomburgkia has been emptied out, the various species placed in Myrmecophila or Laelia dependent on characteristics like those pseudobulbs... flowers are also pretty different.

I will keep calling it schomburgkia
It is one of my favorite words for comic sounds and I have not seen any ants on or in any of them but grandiflora lol so I question just how any loved they really are hahaha
