My very first Cattleya buds! Male
Default My very first Cattleya buds!

Hi Everybody!

Finally my NoID Cattleya purchased from a garden center's death row, has produced some buds!

In the one year it has been with me, it developed around +7-8 new pseudobulbs and an impressing root system, but unfortunately after they matured the sheaths produced have each dried-off and remained empty.

I am a little concerned about the looks and the purple tinge on the buds. Is this normal?

Thanks for your valuable comments!

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!

That's what we like to see. And the red tinge should be ok. Just make sure to not blast the orchid with too strong a light --- such as high power sun. Otherwise, if the lighting levels are great, then that's fine. Buds and stems etc of some orchids can have the colour pigments develop.

Just keep monitoring the bud as it grows. And get some nice close-up shots as the bud gets bigger and bigger. Nice memorable occasions.

In your pic there - the purple will most likely just be the colour on petals or even the lip of your flower ----- which you will soon see ----- as the flower is clearly beginning to open.

The best thing that this particular Cattleya grows under LED lights, so heat is not an issue.

What a beauty. Great save! The purple tinge on leaves is quite normal - it's getting the high end of the amount of light that it wants, and clearly that is working very well. (Think "suntan")

That is a very nice first cattleya! Excellent photo of the flowers too. The yellow contrasts so nicely with the reddy-magenta lip. Very nice.
