Question Ett. Hsiang Yu

Hi, y'all!

I've been driving myself absolutely mad trying to find a specific orchid: Epicatanthe Hsiang Yu "Gold Coast." I've tried Etsy, EBay, Facebook, reaching out to specific vendors that current owners have gotten it from in the past... all in all, it's been about a year of searching now.

The only thing I haven't tried is asking here!

So, here goes.

For anyone who currently has Ett. Hsiang Yu "Gold Coast," where the heck did you get it?!

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

I don't know your level of expertise... that would either be a division or a mericlone of the original plant. Writing orchid names is a little picky: Ett. Hisang Yu 'Gold Coast' with only single quotation marks. Ett. is the hybrid genus abbreviation; Hsiang Yu is the name of the cross. The clonal name 'Gold Coast' given to that one clone suggests to me it was named in Australia but I'm not sure of that.

For mericlones, somebody makes a large batch of them, then sells them to retail vendors. Typically they won't be mericloned again unless it becomes a popular plant and sells fast. But even less popular plants show up from time to time. You'll just need to keep looking and waiting. It might take several years to find.

Hi from Australia, as a retired orchid grower and judge I understand how frustrating it must be as I have been there also.
I cannot tell you where to purchase one in your country but what I add here may be helpful.
First you have an incorrect name spelling. The correct name is Ett. Hsaing Gold Coast. Gold Coast is not the clonal name and Hsaing is the correct spelling of the first part.
If you google the correct name I have given you it does turn up plenty of leads but you will have to hunt a bit as it was available a few years ago.

Hope you have some better luck in your quest now.
Regards, cattmad.

Oh WOW, thank you for that information! Interestingly, typing it the correct way into Google tries to autocorrect it to "Hsiang!" I'll keep searching.

Edit: In fact, Google pulls up 0 results when I search for "Hsaing Yu."

Thank you for this information! I'm new to the board, but not completely new to the world of orchids - certainly, though I am new to wanting to find a specific one as badly as I want to find this!

I will keep searching and asking around!

My apology for the misspelling information in my reply to your query.
I must have been having a senior moment, just a lapse in concentration, happens often when you get old.
