Default Catasetum ivaneae

Catasetum ivaneae ('Purple Fantasy' x 'No. 2'). First bloomer from last year's SVO offering. 15 flowers, so I can only imagine what a mature plant looks like in bloom! no fragrance that I can detect.

Cool species! Why is it that it only recently became popular?

Because you’ve only been able to buy them in the USA without importing them since SVO released them in 2023. They’re very popular in South America.

so I finally got a mild minty/eucalyptus fragrance. it was at the Amherst orchid show and most of the flowers faded pretty quickly. I know catasetums often have short flower life but upon further inspection I think the rapid fading had to do with the sniffers shooting off all the pollinia! (in their defense someone stuck a "smell me" sign in the vicinity, although I believe that was directed at a Den. kingianum). I was able to save 8 out of 30 pollinia, since I'm told this one has pretty good color and decent form...

I have found that any jostling around can trigger pollina and shorten flower life... I mostly don't take them to meetings for that reason, I selfishly want to enjoy them. If I take it someplace to show off, it only makes it to one meeting or show, then fades, alas.

yeah, I was milling around for 20 min before breakdown, and watching people go up to these plants and get their noses in there was a sight to behold. I wonder how many got shot by pollinia!

like a pack of bomb sniffing dogs I say.

Not so funny if they aren't wearing glasses and get one of these stuck to an eyeball!. But I find that just moving them from one place to another (like into the car) can trigger them. Almost impossible to not lose at least a few.
