Here is the first blooming on Clowesia Rebecca Northen 'Mikkabi ミッカビ' with 7 spikes. The blooms are a nice pale pink, frilly, and wonderfully fragrant. It's particularly nice to see the blooms on dormant bulbs.

If all clowesias smell this nice, I need more!

A beautiful blooming. I do love the way that these bloom while still dormant... new growth starts soon but not ready for water for a couple more months.

Mikabi is this best clone I've seen of Rebecca Northen. It has nice, open flowers, something I haven't seen in other clones.

As best as you can, how would you describe the fragrance?

"Mikkabi" clone smells like citrus candy, it's sweet, refreshing, and not overpowering. It just opened and the fragrance may change a bit over the next few days (which my nose has noticed with many orchids)

My other one "hilltop" x "grapefruit pink" had a strong citrus - ginger fragrance with some herbal notes. Reminded me of ricola cough drops. It was still very pleasing and the aroma filled the room.

Both have a wonderful fragrance but "Mikkabi" wins for me.

On a side note...

I'm not sure if it's the same clone as "Mikabi" that's sold in the US. I got mine from a Japanese acquaintance and it's spelled with two ks over there. The pronunciation of the two words are very different in Japanese. Probably lost or gained a k which ever direction of the Pacific it came from!

Since Mikkabi is a city known for citrus... it sort of made sense to me... but it may have been lost in translation somewhere. Perhaps it's word in a nother language and we're all throwing what we know at it. anyway, rambling over!
