Monn. Millenium Magic New Growth Question
Cool Monn. Millenium Magic New Growth Question

Hello all,

I have been searching everywhere for an answer to this question and cannot find it anywhere. I recently received a Monnierara Millenium Magic Witchcraft orchid and it had two new growths. The seller had watered it when the roots were about 2 and 1/2 inches and when I received it the root tips were yellow. Since then, one of the growths has died and the bottom leaf on the other is dying. Does anyone have any advice? I haven't watered it since then, but it hasn't produced any new roots and the roots with the yellow tips haven't done much of anything. I read somewhere that you might be able to water the roots on the old pseudobulb to help the new growth in emergency situations, but I didn't want to do that if it wasn't going to help. Any information that anyone can provide is greatly appreciated, and thanks!

It was watered too early. Most growers in the US find their plants are not ready for the first watering until late May. You should put the plant someplace warm and humid, and wait.

Go to Sunset Valley Orchids and read the culture information pn Catasetinae. Sign up for the E-mail list. Fred Clarke sends out periodic, seasonal growing information, with photos.

Thank you. I have a standard seedling heat mat. Do you think putting it on that would help? I currently grow a Tetraspis C1 on it and it loves it

I would leave it off the heat mat for now. I very strongly recommend you read about it.

In this forum, a few days down, is this thread
Sunset Valley Orchids Spring Culture Notes
There are two links with lots of "when to water" information. I agree with ES, for now just ignore it - if the current batch of roots have been stunted by watering too soon, it is still in the "rooting" time of year and will probably produce another flush of roots. Follow the instructions on when to water (and more important, when NOT to) If you are tempted to water the plant before its time, put your hands in your pockets so that you can't reach for the watering can (and sing "Happy Birthday" to distract yourself)
