So an update on my first year of growing these guys. They don't appear to be growing nearly as quickly as I thought they would, and seem kind of late to get going. Not getting that fat pbulb at all yet. They're always wet now, and I'm using slow release fertilizer. Is this normal for my northeastern Kansas raised climate? Or am I just being too impatient?

They are also relatively young plants. It also depends on which ones... I have some that are huge, and others that are piddling along. Depending on parentage, they also fit in the "growth spectrum" at different points. If nights have warmed up, they likely could benefit from being outside... they love light, heat, and humidity.

They're on a sleeping porch, experiencing all the light, heat, and humidity of a Kansas summer. All but one is some sort of SVO cross. The fifth is Ctsm fimbriatum. But shouldn't they be thicker by now? I figured each year they should get a bit bigger than the year before...

they typically do BUT there can be an adjustment period when they get moved

i suspect that if you keep the culture the same next season will be a BOOM year for them

Most of last year's SVO Catasetinae that I have, are still on the small side. I have one that actually bloomed well shy of having a respectable pseudobulb (and I think another is on the way). One of the things that SVO is doing is breeding Catasetinae that stay relatively smaller. (In fact, that's why I got those last year... since I'm running out of room. If Fred can do for the Catasetinae what he did for the Cattleyas in the way of breeding smaller plants, I would be delighted... and buy more)

They all look great and the new growth is at the height/maturity right before it really starts fattening up. They will look mighty different in 2-3 weeks time. Enjoy!

They look fine to me. It's only July! Check back in at the beginning of September and let's have a look.

What is a sleeping porch?! Can you post a photo?

An excerpt from my "help with a greenhouse" post last year... this is what it was looking like last fall...

Next step... Flooring is laid, sink installed and drainage in place. Shelves hauled up from Batcave. Had to order four more boot trays. When in Batcave, bottom tier just drained onto the floor, so no need for trays on that level.

Facing south...

The south end will have shelving above sink level (not installed yet). The rain barrel came in, to be placed at southwest corner across from sink. It went right back outside when I discovered a big crack on side. Need to get other rain barrel, or repair the one I brought in.

Facing north...

Drain pipe going outside. Pours into a gutter that was already there (kind of like a scupper drain). Please don't notice the miter on molding. I'm trying to teach Bull In A China Shop the finer skills one can attain with a miter saw, but for world peace I had to leave the room during installation.

One of the tray drains, going into drainage pipe. Note that the pipe where it goes outside is at floor level, then note how high it is on south facing wall. Yes, the porch is that unlevel from end to end. One of the pleasures of a porch column setting in a very old house. That's an eight inch drop in 16 feet.

To be updated when I get orchids inside. Should have happened yesterday, but helper "forgot" to show up. I sure get better support and cooperation from friends than I do paying someone... but a necessary evil to avoid burning out friends.

And a second excerpt... this is what it looks like from the outside...

Well, I'm at Plan D now. I won't even bore you with Plans B through C. Especially not since this is gonna be another loooong story from me. Go figure.

Not being able to find someone to put in a greenhouse seemed to really suck. As with many things, there was a plan and I just wasn't cognizant of it. The time spent scheming, and dreaming, and examining all the pros and cons of different ideas while I couldn't find someone paid off in a much better idea... for me.

I live in an old house (1907). It has the old unheated "mud room" attached at the back kitchen entrance, and upstairs "sleeping porch." The sleeping porch over the past 35 years has became a white elephant graveyard. Aptly named, as it has been packed wall to wall with the "stuff" one inherits as loved ones die, that one cannot bear to part with... for a long time.

It's a sixteen foot long, 9' wide structure attached to the main house. The door upstairs into the main house used to be from a small bedroom, which became my laundry room about five years back. In an old house, high ceilings, it's ALWAYS too hot upstairs in the winter. View outside from the southwest.

And from the northwest.

I spent weeks and weeks giving away things, boxing things for the attic, and burning probably ten file boxes of "stuff." Put back on storm windows that had been removed about 20 years ago when painting and never replaced.

Looking south from inside

Looking north from inside

Looking west through one of the four windows

I laid my first laminate plank flooring ever. Was making silly yet critical mistakes. A dear friend I call family (the younger brother I never had) came and helped me install it in about two hours.

Husband is putting in the molding now, and I have a plumber coming this afternoon to put in a sink and drainage.

Updates showing the floor, sink and drain system will follow in the next day or so.

I'm so excited I could spit. And the low is 45F tonight, so need to keep this ball rolling! Shelving is coming up from the BatCave after my plumber friend leaves.
