New leads dry out

Today I examened my orchids to check which ones have new leads.
And I discovered some plants with no healthy leads at all.
They are all brown and dry; before even starting to grow.
How come all leads dry out? Will such plants survive?

Knowing what types of orchids is important - photos are really necessary for us to help, to see what might be going on.

I don't have pics right now.
They are mostly Cattleyas

Unpot, and take a a look at roots, if any. What sort of media are they in? What containers? It's pretty impossible to give good advice without having a chance to see what is going on.
