cymbidium - sunburn? or something more sinister?
Default cymbidium - sunburn? or something more sinister?

Hello
I have had this cymbidium for awhile now. Its been looking rough since last year when I think it got too much sun on its new growth (I had to cut a lot off last year). The new growth this year looks good initially but now is developing the same black spots as the new growth last year (its moved away from the sunny hot window) i have another one thriving in the same spot. is this one just more light sensitive or is it possible this is a fungus or virus related issue? ( i recently repotted and the roots look pretty healthy. it could stand to grow some more but i'm pretty certain root rot isn't a factor here). Any advice to save it would be appreciated, I have never seen it in bloom and don't often find cyms for sale so I would to keep it if it isn't a threat to my other plants.

If you felt the need to post more photos, it means anyone gave you an asnwer.

I can't tell you what it is but if you could see mine you'd be scared just by getting close to them.
Cymbs are the orchids, IMO, that have the ugliest leaves of them all. They are orchids suitable to grow for the flowers and not for the leaves.
As you've notice, last year's new growth had the same problem, so as you can see, that's normal. Not healthy but normal and it doesn't seem to kill the plant.
Also, if you grow them outside (which I think you do), it's even worse.

If your water supply is low in calcium, providing extra calcium may help. Calcium is a nutrients that helps stengthen a plant against many bacterial or fungal diseases. It helped my Cymbidium.

Two suggested options:
1. Dissolve either gypsum, or Plaster of Paris in water. A teaspoon of either one in a gallon of water will do. While you are at it, dissolve a teaspoon of Epsom salts in the same solution. Take a cup of that stock solution, mix in a gallon of water that you will use for watering. The solution provides Ca, Mg, and S (calcium and magnesium sulfates).

2. For just calcium, dissolve a quarter teaspoon of calcium nitrate per gallon, water with that. Calcium nitrate is not compatible with sulfates so don't add gypsum or Epsom salts (the calcium will precipitate out of solution)

Sunburn on Cymbidiums looks like that, especially if they aren't getting enough water.
