Are all the lifespans of this group so short? I've heard that Chiloschista lunifera only lives 3-5 years. Do others live longer?

I've never grown them, but based on what I've seen here, some barely survive getting out of the shipping box.

Yea, I've read/heard the same thing and from my experience...it's spot on. I've only grown one but it didn't last very long. I don't remember which species I had but it did really well for 3 years and then, for no apparent reason, it went into decline and died shortly after that.

They are cool and if I ever run across one at a show or something, I might try it again but I likely won't go looking for another one.

Don't know about Chiloschistas per se, but at one of our society meetings someone was talking about orchids that tend to grow out on the ends/twigs of certain trees.

An environment like that isn't going to last terribly long. So perhaps it is an adaptation to an environment that doesn't last more than three years. By that time it should have flowered and seeded and done its work.

Just a theory.
