collar rot - Orchid Board

I lost one of my phals to collar rot. Just wondering if a phal can ever recover from it, and if so, how is it treated? I couldnt find anything by searching the site.

Hello,
Do you mean crown rot? Yes they can survive. I have had a couple. Just spray 3% hydrogen peroxide to the rot. After a few days you will see an improvement. I just watched it and if I saw it needed more I gave it more.

Collar rot is different than crown rot. Ive never had to deal with crown rot, but this is the second one I have lost to collar rot. They were a year apart. Both were sick when i got them, and alternated between slow growth and slow decline. Not sure what caused the decline but both succumbed to collar rot eventually.

Here is a site with treatment for the collar rot or Southern Blight from The St Augustine Orchid Society:

Treatment: Systemic fungicide like thiophanate methyl (like Cleary's 3336 or Banrot). Sterilize benches and surrounding area with bleach or pool algaecide.

Prevention: Normal sanitation, good air movement and lower temperatures (if possible) may help reduce the spread of this disease. The pathogen is most active in warm weather when humidity is high.

Thanks wintergirl, it has been quite humid and warm lately so it makes sense that the phal, which was already weakened, would suddenly succumb to it. I will have to keep a better eye on my phals for a while and make sure none of the others are showing signs.
