Phalaenopsis with black spots on roots
Unhappy Phalaenopsis with black spots on roots

Hi! This is my first time of taking care of an orchid. I got a phalaenopsis because they are so beautiful. I read that some people recommend that you repot it immediately after buying so that you can asses if the orchid has root rots. When I repotted it, there was only one root that was mushy so I cut it out. The other roots where plump and firm. However the plump and firm roots were not green they are yellowish white with some small black spots on them. Are these roots healthy of are they about to rot? Should I cut them of as well? Also, do I need to soak the roots in fungicide after trimming of a section with root rot? Thanks.

Yellowish white is no big deal. That just means that those roots didn't get a lot of sunlight. Orchid roots need sunlight to be green.

I wouldn't soak the roots in fungicide. As long as you gave the plant a good rinse and cut the root back into healthy tissue, you should be okay.

As far as the black spots, get a couple more posts under your belt. The forum requires that you have I think 5 posts, before you can post pictures. Pictures will be the best way for us to tell you what we think is going on.

Thanks for the reply. It was really appreciated. I will try to post pictures soon. The black spots on the roots were not really mushy. They are of the same texture as the healthy roots. They look like coarsely grounded peppercorns. They actually look like bruises to me but they are not soft. Same firm and plump texture.
