This is my first post, My name is Tami. Today I went Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens and had a great time. But I could not leave with out getting a Orchid. I had one before but didn't know much about it and found out most likely it died from root rot. SO when I walked away I ended up getting two. One is a phal, the other is oncidium twinkle white shower. I have a question about the Oncidium it has some brown tips on some of the leaves, do I need to do something for them? it looks like a few of them already got trimmed. hope I added the pics right. Let me know what you think. Thanks

The oncidium leaves are being attached by fungal diseases most likely.
I would trim off the affected part. Cut into the healthy green part, not right on the border of green and brown parts.
That should usually take care of any further spread.
Expose your plant in good light and do not get water or mist on the leaves.

Also, let this be your lesson and next time you shop orchids, avoid the ones with spots or brown marks on the leaves.

Might have been too wet and cold, or it could be old foliage dying back...

The Franklin Park conservatory orchid show always gets me in trouble too. I had to buy a Masdie last month. The end of show sale is a great way to get inexpensive orchids.
I second the cold too but I would still cut off in the green.

Twinkles! I love them! I just bought my second! I also have oncidium cheiroporum. I grow these in small red lava rock. I gave away all the large oncidiums to make space for other orchids and then I discovered the small ones.

Hi Tami--

Welcome from another newbie! I'll be going to the Franklin Park show April 6/7--given what OhioBob just said about the end of show sale I may just have to expand my growing area (grin). Perhaps it's a good thing that my work schedule prevents me from attending most Central Ohio Orchid Society functions and meetings....

Please take the time to peruse this site--there's tons of information about how to keep and grow orchids (and plenty of people ready and willing to help feed your addiction). Also, it helps to keep a growing conditions log (at least it does for me--they say that the memory is the first thing to go) so you can keep track of what works and what doesn't in your situation.

Good luck and happy growing!

Catherine
