New Use of Old Materials

The piece of wood is from a stump of a longleaf pine? It is called a "catface" by locals. This came from Cheifland, Fl. & the sap from these trees was extracted by making v shaped cuts(you can see the scars) and catching the sap in the masonry cups I am using for orchid pots. The cups are hanging from the orirional nails pouned into the tree. The sap was collected & hauled to a distilling plant and made into turpentine. I am guessing the age of these items at about the early 1900's.

Very nice. I had a contraption once that looked something like this except the wood is polished new wood. I love how yours is so organic looking.

Thank you. The orchids do very well in the old masonry pots. I was very happy when I found the "catface". It was a really tough life for those involved.

They came from the property where I found the "catface" wood. It used to be a turpentine plantation. I have more of these & some Herty cups. I have never seen the one's like I have in the photo.
