Your plants should be fine for a few days. Let us know what you end up doing!

What is a good way of keeping the plants moist while I sort out a tank? water directly into the moss in the pot how I had it over a plate of water? (or another way). Looking for something that I won't need to buy anything for, only short term

Just water it as normal until you get the tank setup. Your plants should fine until then.

If you are able to get a hold of a humidifier, that is a way to provide humidity without the use of a tank.

I am staying in a college dorm so i'm not allowed any electrical devices.

Fire hazard aparently. Glad they don't know about the 12v amolex wall charger that I hacked together from an old modem adapter and a bit of computor cable. Currently insulated with hot glue =). Will have to do something about that...

Just got two 120cm pc fans that should provide plenty of airflow, still looking for a tank - those things are annoying to find, all the ones on our local auction site are really expensive because they all seem to come with pumps, heaters etc.

I'm trying to do this as cheaply as possible so I will hand mist and use travel fridge to cool them.

Most of the tanks I have seen are very big for my 3 plants, what would be some good, easy "filler plants (not nessesarily orchids)?

More orchids!!!!

I think just about any house plant will work well. A lot of people like to grow mosses (spagnum), carnivorous plants (though these require fairly high light) and bromeliads, with tillandsias (air plants) being the smallest sized group.

King of diamonds 05-01-2012 11:23 PM

atm I am bidding on two tanks, a little 3 gallon and a huge 50 gallon.

Just btw, how much of this board is US based? I realise you guys both use US measurements but should I be converting everything for future posts?

If I get the small one I will just stick with the 3 and pad them out with some more moss (spagnum is awesome!) to make it look more natural but if I get the big tank I'll have to get creative.

Put in some bigger orchids, bromeliads etc. I would like to have some CPs but they growing conditions make it impossible to grow in the same tank.

Back to the plants on hand though, what are some warning signs? Plants are perfectly happy right now but just in case. Looks like I won't have a tank till early next week, how often should I mist the leaves? This seems safer then watering, will it work? I have them right next to the computor so I can mist every 10 mins or so if nessesary.

This seems like a good way of keeping them inside http://www.orchidboard.com/community...um-plants.html.

If I get the small tank I will use something like this: USB Mini Cooling Fridge - Free Shipping - DealExtreme actually I will just use the peltier and hook it up to the wall with my handy 12v adaptor. That has got to be the best thing I have ever bodged, so useful.

Should be sufficient to knock the temp back a few degrees fairly easily without having to change the ice daily. Didn't realise the units were so cheap, only 3.95 on evilbay with free worldwide shipping

oops, sorry.

double post

Really, you may not need to mist them at all. It depends on whether or not you know what the humidity of your room is. If it's anywhere around 60% - 70% the plants will be alright. For the Dracula to bloom, the humidity may have to be higher.

I currently grow my Masdevallias outdoors, and I have no problems blooming them. The humidity here is not like where they naturally come from.

King_of_orchid_growing:) 05-02-2012 12:41 AM

I have had Masdevallia andreettaeana bloom multiple times for me outdoors.

I have also bloomed Masd caudata. Incidentally, it is putting out spikes right now. This is also being grown outdoors.
