Paphiopedilum??? With dry wrinkled leaves and a bug!!!.
Default Paphiopedilum??? With dry wrinkled leaves and a bug!!!.

Please Help a Newbie!!! I'm new here and new to Orchids. Last night I adopted an orchid which I believe to be a Paphio.

There are currently 3 big leaves and a new fourth leaf which is about an inch long. The bottom leaf is yellow-green and very wrinkled, the next two are light green and a little wrinkled. There are no flowers on the stem and it is completely brown and dry.

There seem to be a lot of roots in the pot, some are sticking u at the top, but no new root growth.

Should I repot this orchid? I have no idea how old it is or when it was repotted last. Do I wait till I see new root growth? Do I wait till it gets used to it's new environment? Can I revive the wrinkled leaves? Do I cut off the stem and how close to the orchid do I cut it?

I put it in my stairwell which has an eastern facing window.

Also when I lifted the plastic pot out of the terra cotta one there were a few flies and a flat little bug with a black stripe from its head to the bum with lots of legs on it's sides and an antennae that moves from side to side. I washed them off the pot and today I found another when I lifted the pot out of the container again.

Any suggestions to my questions. Thank You

first of all remove the brown leaf, mix some pesticide in water(amount written on its label) and dunk all of it all of the plant including the leaves for about 5-6 minutes then completely dry the crown of the plant or the apex will start to rot.then repot it. just remove the previous potting medium, cut the dead roots, and let the roots dry up and pot it firmly in another pot of an apropriate size.i dont know about how much water, light, temp as i dont grow paphs....hopefully someone else will chime in for that
there you go and water it just found this...it has info on everythiong i didnt know(lighting, watering, etc)
