Oncidium Sharry Baby bursting out of its pot
Cool Oncidium Sharry Baby bursting out of its pot

I just purchased a beautiful Oncidium Sharry Baby. It has a wonderful flowering stem and another stem waiting to burst into bloom.

It is a very large plant in a teeny tiny pot with roots going wild all over the place. I mean, roots are growing outside the pot everywhere! Since it's in flower and this is not the time of year to repot it, I don't know what to do. I tried to post a picture, but I can't seem to get it to work.

Should I just wait till it finishes flowering to repot? And, do I cut off all the roots that are growing outside of the pot? I'm afraid I'll do the plant harm if I cut so many roots. Please help.

no dont cut the roots off unless they are rotten....white and green roots are good roots! i wouldnt worry too much about repotting it now if you wish or just leave it till it is finished blooming and then repot in a larger pot....try to use the clear plastic pots if you can find em, that way you can keep an eye on the progress of the root growth....gl and enjoy!

Thank you so much. I feel better now. I'll wait until it has finished flowering and then repot. It's such a pretty plant and the scent is heavenly.

you can repot them after ur blooms have fallen off. it depends.. if want to propagate then u can divide it... but if u want to to have blooms and larger and longer... then get a larger pot... and just fill it up!... if theres not rotten bulbs just leave it... new ones would grown on the new spaces available... ey... orchids are smart u know! !
