What to do with new oncidium from the grocery store
Default What to do with new oncidium from the grocery store

My mom just helped me buy what I think is an oncidium from the grocery store. I've left it in it's plastic sleeve as I'm not sure what to do with it.
The plant has just one pseudobulb with a few leaves. The pseudobulb is a little bit brown (sunburn?), and the leaves have a bit of colour variation with a slightly lighter green colour at the base.
Leaves have slight splitting and spotting, and they are a bit thin.
I don't know if I should take it out of the sleeve and examine the roots/repot, or hold off on it as I've heard conflicting information.
The medium seems to be a bark on the finer side, and an orchid I've had from that brand came with sphagnum moss.
I've only ever kept phals which I have a few of, so I'm also scared that the new orchid may have a pathogen and spread it to them (due to the spotting).
In short, should I take the orchid out and examine the roots and repot? Or should I just enjoy the blooms and let them fall and then repot?

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

After 5 posts you can post photos. Maybe sooner. That would help. Instructions are in the About this board forum, accessible by clicking Forums in the left yellow menu.

Oncidiums prefer being evenly moist, without drying completely. Your leaf description suggests it got too dry before it came to you. Oncidiums often have a lot of spots. They are rarely due to pathogens.

Be sure it has drain holes. There may be an inner pot inside a decorative outer container with no holes. If so, take out the inner container to water, and soak the medium thoroughly at a sink. Note how much it weighs. Water again when the surface is dry, and note how much it weighs when drier.

Give bright shade. Some morning sun is fine.

Repot when you see new roots forming on new growth. This is usually a few weeks after flowers fall. Don't unpot or disturb roots otherwise. Don't cut off any roots when you repot.

Do some more reading here in the Oncidium forum.

Thank you, I will stick to just watering without repotting. Should I give this new orchid fertilizer or just flush?

I would suggest you flush all new orchids at least twice, just in case. You don't know when or how much fertilizer they got last time. You shouldn't really worry; i had to split mine after a year because the damn thing won't stop growing, and now it's getting out of hand again. Just think of it as a phal that likes it a bit more moist and parhaps a tad more light. Works with me; seven spikes in two years, regadless of dividing (would not suggest trying that just yet, lol)

@estación seca are you parhaps referring to yellow-ish spots?

Oncidiums get lots of small brown and black spots. Yellowish areas are often insufficient water, high temperatures, sunburn or natural changes in leaves dying of old age.
