Hello,

Today I recieved a little orchid in bad, almost peculiar state.
Do you have any idea what to do?
The roots are dry, I soaked it and am thinking about medium. I plan to cut the spike. I dont even know how it developed flowers...

Thank you for all the ideas!

Well, I can't see and touch things...so that's up to you.
But I'd suspect it has rotten roots. You'll have to investigate that.
Given that you can acquire a mini phal (which is what I think you have here) for about $7, I would suggest just letting it go.

However, if you choose otherwise, get it out of the spaghnum (assume that's what it was in) and get it dry and put it in a clear plastic ziploc or something like that...put in bright light (not sun), and maybe once a week spray lightly the roots and hope it can reestablish roots.

Phals don't object to being repotted anytime, even while in bloom. So I agree, get it out of the pot and take a look at what's going on. Now that you have watered the roots, you can see if they were just underwatered (in which case they will "green up") or if they were rotted (which will be obvious) If roots are bad (rotted velamin, the outside coating of the root) you could remove that spongy material but don't cut the stringy core of the roots - they are capable of hydrating the plant, even if not very efficiently, and also serve the purpose of holding the plant firmly in place when you pot it into better medium (I suggest small/medium bark)

Why does that look like it's growing out of a chocolate cupcake?

That was a funny exchange. I thought it looked like a cupcake too, though.

Thank you all for the replies!
I have been to an orchid production centre and they had young plants (11 weeks old, no spike) in that before they were moved to the regular bark substrate... Maybe they used this to save on production cost?? It really confuses me how the orchid had the energ to develop the spike..
I will update the thread if there is a developement!
