Help!!Monkeys attacked my orchids :'(
Default Help!!Monkeys attacked my orchids :'(

Hi.
Today, some wild monkeys attacked my orchid collection. i really want to write stuff which can get me banned , so i will restrain myself.
apart from eating my first ever rebloom of a phalaenopsis ( a spike with 6 buds a a flower) the monkeys really attacked a vanda which had been doing really well recently.
they did the following things to it:
1. broke the growing tips of 2 new roots, which the vanda was producing after it had lost most of its roots.
2. partially broke some leaves.
3 . THEY PULLED OUT THE NEWEST LEAF FROM THE CROWN
is the crown destroyed? what will happen now?
it hadnt even flowered for me yet
if i am not wrong, a crown less monopodial will try to put out keikis, but they take YEARS to mature.
i feel really sad, and feel like getting rid of the vanda.Help!!Monkeys attacked my orchids :'(-whatsapp-image-2022-10-16-11-07-54-am-jpg

I am so sorry. We work so hard to grow them, have our dreams and our plans, and then sometimes we wake up to thrips....or in your case, MONKEYS!!!

I feel your pain! I learned the hard way to keep plants in spike away from the fence, lest they fall victim to raccoons, had 4 spikes neatly amputated. (They also seem to prefer the best Paphs) Different climate, different beasts, still the orchids are the victims.

Quite an event. But perhaps you need to consider erecting some sort of enclosure or deterrent. I understand monkeys are quite intelligent tho...think like a primate.

I've had plenty of outdoor plants--not orchids--destroyed by wildlife--not monkeys.
Birds, skunks, mice, packrats, gophers, chipmunks, racoons, deer. Javelina seem to be an Arizona specialty.
Anyhow, I know it's not funny to lose plants like that, but your problem did bring a smile to my face but just for a minute.
I'm trying to visualize what sort of fence or enclosure it would take to keep monkeys out. Some sort of greenhouse fortress? That's a tough one. Have you seen any local solutions?
Anyhow, you do have my sympathy! I hope your plants recover and thrive.

I've been in a position of having to care for captive monkeys, and you have my complete sympathy. They're crazy smart, and once they get to wanting to do something, they'll figure out a way. Good luck!

If you’re handy with tools you could build an enclosure with hardware cloth, also called wire mesh or wire fencing in the US. It has very small gaps (about 2cm / 1/2”) and thicker wire than chicken wire. It stands up to coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, and even puma/cougars if the structure is assembled well enough.

The Vanda will grow back. Often when the first spike is damaged another will grow soon.
