Help me not to kill this phal (and avoid stem rot?)

Sorry folks but I have to say it once: again a perfectly well, flowering Phal repotted without need.

Sometines I think I live on another planet. If I watered my Phals as you obviously advise others to do, I wouldn't have any Phal left.

Silvery roots are healthy roots. And highly nurtured miniphals do get rid of too much leaves once they find themselves outside the greenhouse environment with maximal growing parameters.

I promise I'll never again be writing in a Phal-rescue-thread!

Bark is naturally water-repellant to some degree. It needs to be in order to protect the tree.

Just because orchid bark sheds water when it's new doesn't mean it is low quality (doesn't mean it's high quality either). The Kiwi Bark that I use is highly regarded and excellent quality, and when it is fresh it holds very little water. I have to water newly repotted plants in small pots daily or every other day at first in my conditions (indoor daytime 23-27C / 74-80F and 50% humidity). Larger pots need to be watered every 2-4 days until the bark starts holding a bit more water.

Bark that is a bit water-repellant mixed with moss may be the ideal combination! The moss will hold water, the bark will help with structure and airflow.

grautier if you were talking to me, you are living on a different planet to me yes.

At least I consider you that far away that it practically is a different planet.

I really don't know what to make of your comment. I have over 50 phals. I'm not going to go into who has more experience, I don't care, what I do care about is someone saying I am a plant killer or what I do would kill my plants

What can I say but to excuse it on lack of experience?

I dunno, honestly, as long as this doesn't turn into a nother hate fest. My phals are absolutely thriving and yes my watering technique is unique and a reason for my success.

This is an interesting start to 2022 for sure though. I think I must have started off the year wrong.

I mean pollicino still has concerns about the stem.

Pollicino it will be fine now, you have done the right thing, thsoe plugs are like soil. They suffocate. Not good in a european climate. Afrcia is a different planet to us.

Phals seem to tolerate repotting while blooming. I'd go ahead and pot that one up, in a well-drained medium. (Like medium bark) Let the roots turn silvery before watering again - the open medium will have lots of air space for that "humid air" that the roots need. Also, all that air will provide an environment where rot (bacterial or fungal) can't get a foothold - with a healthy environment, there should be no treatment needed.

Usually, but not always. The result can be different in a humid greenhouse vs. in a home.
